So far BRinK recorded 150 bird species in Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve. The diversity ranges from passerines over endangered vultures to the large ostrich. Birds can be used as indicators for environmental health. Being used this way, the study of birds in Kuzikus can indicate the health of various parts of the reserve and reveal insights into bird ecology. Long-term monitoring of birds gives us clues about population fluctuations and their plausible future and phenology. We use point counts and line transects to document species occurance and density. We are also interested in the nesting behaviour of the lapped-face vulture and the endemic sociable weaver.
The aim of this project is to inventor birds species and to determine habitat preferences of different species of bird. Within exceptional wildlife, we will
- identify at over 150 species of bird by song and sight (training on site)
- use wildlife sound recording equipment
- collect data for species distribution in the area
- map the distribution of the lappet-faced vulture and the sociable weaver in Kuzikus
